The Bible Reminds Us of the Need to Rest

As far back as the Exodus God told the Israelites rest revolves around staying connected with the Holy Spirit.
“My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
Exodus 33
So, you would think Christian folks would have no trouble taking time out to rest in the comfort and peace of God. But it seems we do. I mentioned in last week’s blog I have always had trouble taking time away from the pulpit. I like to stay busy.
But this past Sunday when our Lay Leader reminded the congregation of the peace she and her husband found in resting in God when their little granddaughter was injured in a fall, it reminded all of us of the importance of going to God for rest.
We can find rest when we pray. We can find rest in knowing that others are praying for us.
As far as the Bible and rest, the most notable reference is likely this one:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28
Rest from all the challenges the world tries to foist upon us is God’s gift for today. We don’t need to look at rest the way popular culture does. You’ve probably also heard the slogan, “I’ll rest when I’m dead.”
Pretty sure that is not a reference to resting in the peace of Christ. It is the world telling us to keep on keeping on. Get yours and don’t give a hoot about anybody else. The one who dies with the most toys wins. That’s another expression that Christians know actually means the one who dies with the most toys still dies.
Rest is not giving up. Rest is a reward for trusting God. Rest is renewal. Rest is God’s gift to our hearts and our heads.
A week in upstate New York is where Kathy and I went to find rest. We rested in the peace of Christ because we knew our home and pets were safe in the care of our friend Hannah. We knew the church we serve is trusting in God and well shepherded by their own reliance on God. Eric led the music in Kathy’s absence and as I mentioned already, Vickie offered a message about resting in Christ through the power of prayer.
Another reminder of Christ’s presence came as we were walking to the food court inside the New York capital building in Albany. Never doubt Christ walks with believers wherever we go.
A large man came up from behind us and started talking about Jesus. He said he believed in being cordial to those who crossed his path every day, because it’s so easy to be difficult if we don’t rely on the power of the Holy Spirit in all we do. I, know, right! In New York! But there he was. We chatted for a few minutes and then as we were parting company he felt called to pray over us.
What do we say as Global Methodists? Witness boldly. Leroy was a shining example of resting in the peace of Christ as we witness to his power in our lives.
It was a restful reminder in a busy week away. The other reminder of the glory of God was Niagara Falls. The waterfalls are something to behold. Television does not do them justice. There are several different waterfalls in the area called Niagara Falls State Park. We walked across the bridge into Canada where the views back toward the falls are even better.
I also was blessed to affirm a long-time friendship with a pastor friend, Mike, and his bride Diane who moved to the Buffalo area to be near grandchildren.
Although it was quite busy, it was restful renewing and inspiring. That is why scripture reminds us to take time to rest in Christ every day…and wear comfortable shoes.
