How Hot Is It?

How Hot Is It?

How Hot Is It?

There are summers that feel warm and pleasant, and then there are Central Texas summers that feel like the sun has moved into the front yard and opened up a breakfast buffet (eggs on the sidewalk, get it?)

The grass turns brittle. The air feels heavy before breakfast. Even the smallest chore can seem harder when the heat refuses to let up.   Its less than a quarter mile to walk from our house to the mailbox, but lately I have wondered if a pack of junk mail is worth the sweat.

A super hot summer is more than uncomfortable; it is draining. It reminds us how quickly our strength can fade when pressure stays high day after day.

Sometimes our life challenges are not one dramatic crisis, but the steady heat of responsibilities, disappointments, bills, grief, conflict, health concerns, or uncertainty. We wake up already tired. We wonder how long it will last. We look for relief and may find that shade is harder to come by than we expected.

Yet the Bible never pretends that God’s people will avoid hard weather.  Instead, the Bible teaches us how to endure it with faith. James writes, “Consider it pure joy… whenever you face trials of many kinds,” because the testing of faith produces perseverance (James 1:2–4). That does not mean hardship feels joyful in the moment. It means God can use even the hottest seasons to grow something steady and lasting within us.

One lesson of extreme heat is the importance of staying close to a source of refreshment. No one gets through a scorching afternoon by ignoring water. In the same way, our souls need to be hydrated, we can’t thrive when we are cut off from God’s presence. Psalm 121:5–6 says, “The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day.”

That is a powerful picture: God is not distant from us while we sweat through life’s demands. He is shade near at hand, protection close enough                        to stand under.

Prayer, worship, Scripture, and Christian community become spiritual shade and hydration. They may not instantly lower the temperature of our circumstances, but they keep us from collapsing under the heat. When we open the Word, we remember what is true. When we pray honestly, we stop carrying the burden alone. When we gather with believers, we are reminded that endurance is not meant to be a solo project.

Another lesson from a hot summer is that we must pace ourselves. When the temperature climbs, wisdom tells us not to act as if nothing has changed. We slow down, rest when needed, and pay attention to warning signs. Spiritually, many people burn out because they confuse faithfulness with never needing rest.

But Jesus Himself said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Rest is not a lack of faith. Rest can be an act of trust.

A super hot summer eventually passes. The first cool morning feels like a gift. The ground softens. The air changes. Life’s hard seasons may not end on our schedule, but they are not beyond God’s reach. He can make “a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland” (Isaiah 43:19). Even when circumstances remain difficult, God can bring renewal inside us.

So when life feels blazing hot, like it will this afternoon,  do not measure God’s care by the temperature of the day. Look for His shade. Drink deeply from His Word. Rest in Christ. Walk patiently with others. Keep your hope anchored in the One who is with you in the heat and faithful beyond it.

The summer may be intense, but it is not stronger than the God who sustains ua. And with Him, even the hardest season can become a place where endurance grows, character deepens, and hope rises again.
